How to use midjourney — beginner’s guide to ai art

Midjourney is undoubtedly the best ai image tool around, and it’s easy to see why – the images are simply stunning. Here’s how to use it if you’re a complete beginner.

how to access midjourney

Midjourney is run by discord. Head to midjourney.com, hit join the beta and you’ll be directed to their discord server. Sign up for a free discord account if you haven’t already. Midjourney (unlike this site) isn’t free (subscription plans start at $10 a month), but the results are well worth it.

your first image

In the discord server, locate a newbie channel and use the command /imagine then add a description (e.g. /imagine a mountain lake filled with thick fog as first light hits at dawn, in the style of an oil painting, with dramatic lighting). Press enter and midjourney will generate in around a minute four variations.

understanding the buttons

Now under you generated images you’ll see u1, u2, u3, u4 (upscale- makes one image bigger and more detailed) and v1, v2, v3, v4 (variations- generates 4 new versions similar to that one). Begin with u to upscale your favorite.

better prompts = better images

Be specific. Use style words such as photorealistic, cinematic, 8k, oil painting, watercolor, anime style. Use lighting words like golden hour, soft light, dramatic shadows. Use composition words like close-up, wide angle, bird’s eye view.

using aspect ratios

Add –ar 16:9 for widescreen, –ar 1:1 for square, –ar 9:16 for phone wallpaper. This controls the shape of your image. This is important depending on what you are going to do with the image.

Midjourney does take some time to get used to but it’s well worth the effort. Spend an hour trying different prompts, and you’ll soon get a feel for the possibilities.
