Claude is developed by anthropic and it’s one of the best ais that you’ve almost definitely never heard of. I’ve seen claude discussed in the same sentences as chatgpt quite a few times but for whatever reason it never quite gets the same fanfare. So, let’s compare them honestly so you know which is which.
what is claude?
Claude is the aisist of anthropic and is available at claude.ai for free. Anthropic was founded by former researchers at openais and claude is renowned for being detailed, articulate, and excellent at writing and nuanced reasoning.
quality of writing
this is very close: claude’s outputs sound more human and less mechanical than chatgpt’s. Several writers i speak to at my job prefer claude when writing longer articles, emails or reports because the outputs require less editing than the equivalent from chatgpt. That being said both are great here.
long documents
claude shines brightly here: it can actually process an entire book chapter or even an entire long research paper. I can paste an entire document and have claude summarize, discuss or answer questions without any issues whatsoever. Claude’s context window-the amount of information it remembers-is significantly larger than chatgpt’s free version.
following instructions
claude’s ability to follow even complex and detailed instructions is phenomenal. The tool really excels if you provide clear instructions like ‘explain this in bullet points, and only allow one sentence per point,’ claude typically follows your direction to the letter. Chatgpt sometimes ignores nuances within these instructions.
who is smartest?
Frankly neither: both are extremely intelligent and are incredibly helpful. Neither is technically ‘smarter.’ they simply specialize in slightly different areas. Claude is often thought to be better at problem-solving or difficult reasoning. Chatgpt on the other hand excels at creativity or coded responses. You are unlikely to notice the difference in everyday use cases however.
my take:
i use both. I would first recommend trying out chatgpt because you can find the most tutorials and help online for it. Afterward try to experiment with the many ways claude can help, particularly if you write very long documents or need detailed, focused responses from your ais.
