What is Perplexity AI?
Perplexity AI is a search engine powered by AI. Instead of showing you a list of links like Google does, it reads the web and gives you a direct answer with sources listed at the side. Think of it like asking a very well-read friend a question. They give you the answer straight away and tell you where they got the information from.
How is it different from Google?
Google shows you links and you click through to find the answer yourself. Perplexity reads those pages and summarises the answer for you. It saves a lot of time when you have a specific question. You also get to see exactly which websites it used to build the answer, so you can check them if you want. That transparency is actually really refreshing.
Is it free?
Yes, Perplexity has a free version that works very well. There is a paid plan called Perplexity Pro that gives you access to more powerful AI models and unlimited searches. But for most people the free version is more than enough for everyday searching.
Where does it work best?
Perplexity is excellent for research questions where you want a summarised answer quickly. It is great for questions like what are the side effects of a certain medication, how does a certain technology work, or what happened in the news this week. It is not as good for finding specific websites or local business information like Google is.
Any limitations?
Sometimes Perplexity gets things wrong. Like any AI it can make mistakes or confidently give you outdated information. Always check the sources it lists, especially for anything important like medical or legal information. Also it does not always have the most current news since there can be a short delay.
Should you use it?
Yes, absolutely worth trying. It will not replace Google entirely but it is a great tool to have alongside it. For research and quick factual questions, Perplexity is often faster and more useful than traditional search. Give the free version a try for a week and see if it changes how you search.
